Abstract

The inflammation-oxidative stress relationship in adipose tissue could be a factor in the onset of metabolic disorders, insulin resistance and diabetes. In adipose tissue the inducible isoforms of the enzymes cyclooxygenase and nitric oxide synthase are recognized to play a role in the development of type 2 diabetes and its complications. The mulberry heartwood extract is known to possess antioxidant properties but there is a lack of data about its effects on these enzymes under oxidative stress. In the present study various concentrations of the extract were applied on a preadipocyte cell culture under tert-butyl hydroperoxide-induced oxidative stress. The results obtained revealed that the extract inhibited the expression of both enzymes. This effect was markedly significant under oxidative stress conditions. Based on these results we concluded that the mulberry heartwood extract could have a beneficial effect in the prevention and control of diseases associated with impared metabolism in adipose tissue.
