Multidisciplinary team for integrated care and the place of the physiotherapist in the team

Gergana Nenova, Todorka Kostadinova

Abstract

Despite the undoubted achievements, the European health systems are continuously reforming. The hospital and pre-hospital healthcare seeks mechanisms and ways for better integration and economization of the activities. In this process, integrated care (IC) is placed between medical and social care. They are provided to people with physical or mental disorders, elderly patients, and others who need help in performing daily activities. The specifics of the rehabilitative care (as part of the integrated care) in hospital, prehospital and home conditions, require the involvement of various medical and non-medical professionals. Their teamwork is aimed at solving the problem of the patient in its holistic integrity. The leading part of the physiotherapist in this team is a prerequisite for timely and adequately conducted rehabilitation, minimizing the risk of disability.
