Abstract

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is a highly sensitive method for identification of chronic pancreatitis. ERCP is able to show even slight morphological abnormalities, but it is invasive. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography is a noninvasive technique that is able to demonstrate dilatation, narrowing and irregular width of the main pancreatic duct, and also filling defects caused by gallstones or protein deposits in chronic pancreatitis. МRCP allows visualization of the pancreatic duct distally to the sites of obstruction and pseudocysts. МRCP is a sensitive tool for finding moderate and severe, but not mild forms of chronic pancreatitis. This disadvantage can be compensated by the introduction of sekretin stimulated diffusion weighted МRCP (secretin stimulated DW MRI). The latter allows study of the exocrine pancreatic function.
