Stroke is the most common cause of epileptic seizures in middle-aged and elderly patients. The incidence of epileptic seizures depends on several factors, as the most important of them are the type and severity of stroke, the etiopathogenesis and the presence of electroencephalographic (EEG) changes.
Subject of our study are a total of 1156 patients with acute stroke, hospitalized at the Second Neurological Clinic with ICU and Stroke Unit of St. Marina University Hospital, Varna for the period from January 2017 to December 2017.
The results from our study are largely correlated with those reported in the scientific literature from previous studies. The incidence of seizures after stroke is 5.81 percent, with more frequent seizures after hemorrhagic stroke. In the group with ischemic stroke, there is a higher incidence of thrombotic than embolic etiopathogenesis. According to the gender distribution, there is an increased risk of seizures after stroke in men. The severity of stroke assessed using the NIHSS scale, correlates with the incidence of seizures, as 80% of patients are rated with moderate or severe neurological impairment, and this serves as major predictor of epileptic seizures after a stroke.
