Diana Grozdeva

Abstract

Parental care during early childhood influences the child and its life as a whole. The role of the nurse is related to providing support to parents in order to create a safe and healthy environment when it comes to raising and educating their children. The aim of the present study is to examine the readiness of nurses in nurseries to train parents in developing healthy habits in children up to 3 years of age. Materials and methods: A direct anonymous survey was conducted among 49 nurses regarding their readiness to train parents in developing healthy habits. The survey covers 774 (51.5%) of children who attended nurseries in Varna during July 2020. The data were processed statistically via variance, variation and comparative analyses. Results: Majority of nurses (98.2%) indicate they feel prepared to develop healthy habits in children of up to 3 years of age but only 45.5% are willing to train parents. The main form of training for parents, as indicated by the nurses, is the creation of a manual (27.5%), followed by short talks with practical guidance (26.8%) and brochures (21%). Results: The results of the present study show that nursery nurses have the knowledge, skills and readiness to train parents, supporting them in the child’s upbringing when developing healthy habits and in terms of its intellectual and emotional development.
