Introduction: Diabetic polyneuropathy with loss of protective sensitivity of the peripheral system is a major risk factor for one or more ulcerations followed by amputation of the foot. Semmes-Weinstein monofilament is used to diagnose this potential complication of diabetes in many specialized centers.
Aim: The aim of this article is to introduce a scientifically proven, effective, and affordable tool for preventive examination of patients with diabetes in the general medical practice.
Materials and Methods: Review of medical literature from recent years has been conducted.
Results: Semmes-Weinstein monofilament testing is a good and easily applicable method for painless and effective screening of diabetic neuropathy, with positive evidence-based prognostic characteristics. An additional advantage is that the monofilament is easily portable and convenient for use by general practitioners.
Conclusion: Testing for impaired sensitivity to Semmes-Weinstein monofilament is a safe, effective and inexpensive method for seeking patients with diabetic neuropathy in the General practitioner’s office and would reduce the risk of developing diabetic foot.
