Dry mouth or xerostomia is a condition in which the salivary glands do not produce enough saliva. It is common as up to 30% of people in different populations report dry mouth or have a proven small amount of saliva. Due to the many complications it leads to, it is important to know the factors causing it.
The condition is most often due to the side effect of taking medication. It also occurs after radiation or chemotherapy. Numerous diseases and conditions can also have a decreasing effect on the amount of saliva.
Doctors should have good knowledge of this condition and know its etiology, signs and symptoms in order to recommend the most appropriate and effective treatment and prevent health complications, improve the quality of life of their patients, alleviate the clinical manifestations of this severe condition.
